What is LH?
What is LH?
LH (Luteinizing hormone) is a hormone that is secreted from the anterior pituitary lobe in the brain together with hormones such as FSH, TSH, and PRL and plays a role in reproductive functions. GnRH (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone) secreted from the hypothalamus stimulates the pituitary gland and causes the secretion of FSH and LH. FSH and LH are also called gonadotropins.
What does LH do?
While FSH plays a role in ovum development, LH is the hormone that causes the ovum to hatch. When it reaches to the high level, which we call LH peak, ovulation takes place. If the ovum is fertilized during this period, pregnancy occurs. It also stimulates the production of Progesterone hormone after hatching. LH secreted from the corpus luteum is also necessary for the continuation of pregnancy.
What should be the LH value in women?
LH levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle (cycle).
Follicular phase (between the start of menstruation – ovulation): 1.24-8.62 mIU/ml
Ovulation period: 19-103 mIU/ml
Luteal Phase (post-ovulation): 1.3-12.89 mIU/ml
LH values vary according to the reference range of laboratories and hospitals. It would be appropriate that your doctor evaluate your results.
Can the LH hormone value be sometimes low and sometimes high?
Since LH values vary according to the phases of the cycle, high or low values can be detected in the same month depending on when it is done.
What should FSH be on the 3rd day of menstruation?
Although laboratory reference values vary, FSH: 2-12 mIU/ml is considered normal on the 3rd day of menstruation.
What is the difference between FSH and LH?
Both FSH and LH are hormones secreted from the anterior pituitary lobe. FSH starts to rise from the beginning of the cycle, it helps the ovum to grow and mature. When the ovum reaches a sufficient size, LH rises and provides hatching and ovulation.
Why is the LH/FSH ratio important?
The rate that is 1/1 before puberty becomes 1.5-2/1 after puberty. If it is greater than 2.5, possibilities such as polycystic ovary or pituitary tumor are taken into consideration.
What does high LH mean?
High LH is normal in the middle of the cycle, LH must rise to ensure ovulation. High LH at the beginning of the cycle and having LH values greater than FSH values is a symptom observed mostly in polycystic ovary syndrome in the women of reproductive age. During menopause, LH levels begin to rise again.
What are the symptoms of high LH?
We see high LH at the beginning of the cycle, mostly in polycystic ovary syndrome in the women of reproductive age. It has symptoms such as menstrual irregularity, lack of ovulation, tendency to gain weight, and increased hair growth on the face and body.
Only the hormone level is not enough to make a diagnosis of a disease, it should be evaluated and diagnosed by the doctor together with the examination findings and the patient's history.
What is low LH?
It is the LH level measured at the beginning of the cycle(between the 2nd-5th day of the menstrual cycle) less than 1-1.5 mIU/ml.
- hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
- Kallmann syndrome
- High prolactin
- Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, excessive weight loss
- Excessive stress
- Some heart drugs, psychiatric drugs, hormone drugs can cause low LH.
How to increase LH?
The condition causing low LH should be evaluated by the doctor and the underlying cause or disease should be treated.
In what range is LH in menopausal women?
Although laboratory reference intervals are different, LH values during menopause are between 12-55 mIU/ml. LH measurement alone cannot be used in diagnosing menopause. FSH, AMH, E2 hormone levels are more valuable diagnostic tools than LH levels.
Is it possible to get pregnant with a high FSH value?
Adetin 2.If the FSH value measured on the 2nd-3rd day of menstruation is greater than 12, it is understood that the ovarian reserve has decreased. The diagnosis is confirmed according to AMH and AFC (antral follicle count). If the FSH level is above 40 and there is no menstruation for more than 6 months, a woman cannot have children. The women with reduced ovarian reserve, but menstruating and continuing egg cell production can have children.
What are the LH test prices?
Test prices vary according to hospitals and laboratories.
