Causes of Infertility

Infertility is a condition that is experienced by one out of ten couples. Infertility occurs when the couple cannot have a child despite the regular sexual intercourse for a period of one year without using any birth control methods.

Infertility may be observed with both men and women. Therefore, both spouses should be examined and have diagnostic tests performed during the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

Causes of Male Infertility

  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm motility, sperm cannot pass through the uterus to reach the egg.
  • Sperm cannot penetrate the exterior of the egg due to its "morphology" (distorted shape)
  • Lack of sperm production or sperm completely (may be due obstruction in sperm tracts).

These disorders may result from the following:

  • Varicocele (enlargement of testicular vessels )
  • Testicular infections (mumps, etc.).
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Testicular tumors
  • Genetic abnormalities
  • Immunological causes (presence of agents called antibody and produced against sperm and eliminates them)
  • Psychological causes
  • Difficulties in sexual intercourse, erection or ejaculation problems.

Causes of Female Infertility

  • Hormonal disorders
  • Blocked or damaged tubes
  • Uterus-related structural problems
  • Endometriosis
  • Immunological causes
  • Genetic disorders
  • Psychological causes
Tests used as a basis for diagnosis;
  • Hormone analysis contains Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), which indicate ovarian functions, Anti-Mülleryen Hormone (AMH), which indicates ovarian capacity, Testosterone and DHEA-S, which are male hormones, and Prolactin, normally responsible for milk production.
  • Ultrasound is performed to view size, shape and status of the ovaries and uterus, i.e.,, female internal genital organs. In addition, the number of eggs with a possibility to develop in the ovaries in that month can be determined.
  • Semen analysis is a test that is applied to men to measure the quality of male reproductive cells.
    • Normal values are as follows:
    • Minimum 15 million / ml
    • Motility: A total of 40 million / ml forward in minimum
    • Morphology "shape": Minimum 4%

In addition to these tests, Laparoscopy, Hysteroscopy, Hysterosalpingography and genetic tests are also availble in our center.
