What is the Pooling Method?
What is the pooling method in IVF?
The pooling method in IVF is the procedure of collecting 2 or more eggs and freezing and depositing embryos without transferring them.
To whom the pooling method is applied in IVF treatment?
The pooling method can be recommended for the transfer of 2 high-quality embryos in patients over 35 years of age with reduced ovarian reserve. Increasing the number of embryos to be genetically screened by the pooling method in patients with recurrent IVF failure or who are recommended PGD because of genetic disease increases the chances of achieving a healthy embryo.
Does the pooling method increase the chance of IVF success?
In IVF patients who have the right to two embryo transfers (those over the age of 35 and those who have had more than 2 IVF trials), transferring two quality embryos increases the chances of pregnancy, but the likelihood of a twin pregnancy also increases.
Is the pooling method only administered to patients with low egg reserves?
To increase the number of patients with low egg reserves, the pooling method is recommended. On the other hand, increasing the number of embryos to be screened with the pooling method in the patient group whose ovarian reserve is good and who will undergo PGD (genetic screening of embryos) both reduces the cost and increases the chance of reaching healthy embryos.
Can a genetic screening test be performed in the pooling method?
Absolutely... Embryos are not transferred the same month in patients who will be genetically screened; they are frozen until a genetically healthy result is obtained. We would like to have at least 4-5 embryos on the 5th-6th Day (blastocyst) in order to chromosome screening. Since the percentage of obtaining healthy embryos in some types of translocation (chromosomal abnormality) or genetic diseases is low, it is useful to collect embryos using the pooling method.
What are the stages of the pooling method?
Egg enlargement injection treatment is started on the 2nd-3rd day of menstruation. It takes an average of 10-12 days, when sufficient egg size is reached (>17-18 mm), the cracking injection is administered, and at the 35th-36th hour, egg collection (Ovum pick-up/OPU) is performed. With sperm taken from the male, eggs are fertilized in the laboratory; embryos are frozen on the 3rd and/or 5th day. During the next menstrual period, treatment is restarted. This process continues in 2 or more cycles. When a sufficient number of embryos is reached or when genetically healthy embryos are obtained, intrauterine preparatory treatment is started and suitable embryos are transferred between the 15th and 20th day of the average menstrual period.
After retrieving large eggs in patients with low ovarian reserve, if there are progenitor eggs behind, magnifying treatment can be administered and egg retrieval can be performed for the second time in the same cycle.
Is the pooling method an easy treatment?
The pooling method is not much different from the usual IVF treatment. Sometimes even fewer needles are used and it may be more comfortable for the patient.
What are the Advantages of the Pooling Method?
IVF treatment is a treatment with a fairly high-stress rate. Some of the patients may despair and refuse treatment when they receive a single negative result. This situation eliminates the chances of patients becoming parents, and sometimes because they are taking a break from treatment, it causes a waste of time and a low chance of success, especially in a group of patients with low ovarian reserve.
The pooling method increases the probability of pregnancy of patients by accumulating embryos, increasing the chances of obtaining a quality embryo.
In addition, the costs of 2nd-3rd treatment are lower, the cost of genetic screening is reduced, which also gives patients a financial advantage.
