What Does the Hormone Levels Inform Us About?

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormon)

The AMH test, which can be performed on any day of the menstrual cycle, determines the ovarian reserve much better compared to other tests. AMH levels have started to be tested recently. If the AMH level is less than 1ng/ml, it can be considered that the ovarian reserve is low .

FSH 

Because women do not produce any new eggs after birth, the reserve of eggs in a woman begin to decrease starting from the time of birth. The FSH hormone ensures the growth and nourishment of the egg cell. FSH hormone levels; which are usually tested within the first 5 days of the menstrual cycle, can inform of ovarian reserves albeit indirectly. FSH levels more than 12 mIU/ml can be interpreted in favor of a problem in the ovarian reserve or a poor ovarian response.

LH

The LH hormone, which induces ovulation by having a surge in its levels in the middle of the menstrual cycle, is the main hormone that causes the follicular rupture (release of the egg). The FSH/LH ratio is normally more than 1 at the start of the menstrual cycle.

An LH/FSH ratio more than 2.5 may cause suspicion of polycystic ovary syndrome. The LH hormone levels are elevated in the metabolic disorder called polycystic ovary syndrome. The ovaries may over-respond to medications administered for their stimulation.

Prolactin

High levels of prolactin hormone, a hormone that is involved in the excretion of breastmilk, prevents the establishment of pregnancy. Prolactin hormone levels can be elevated without a specified cause or they can increase in hypothyroidism.

Testosterone

Testosterone is the male hormone and may be elevated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and in women with abnormal body hair growth and irregular menstrual cycles. Especially in women with irregular menstrual cycles or more than normal body hair growth, the assessment of testosterone hormone levels is recommended.

DHEAS

DHEAS is the male hormone secreted from the adrenal glands. The DHEAS levels can be found elevated especially in women with increased body hair growth and with adrenal gland disorders."
